Experiencing the Arctic First-Hand

As part of our commitment to providing genuine, first-hand expertise to our clients, we recently joined an extraordinary educational expedition to the Arctic with Quark Expeditions onboard the beautiful Ocean Explorer.

This wasn’t cruising as most people know it.

No crowded pool decks. No endless entertainment schedules. No rushing from port to port.

Instead? Icebergs, polar bears, glaciers, Zodiac landings, wildlife encounters, raw nature, deep reflection, and one of the most peaceful travel experiences I have ever experienced.

Our expedition took us to Svalbard, a remote Norwegian archipelago sitting high in the Arctic Ocean, roughly halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. It is one of the northernmost inhabited places on Earth - wild, rugged, breathtaking, and utterly unforgettable.

What quickly became clear is this: expedition travel is not just a holiday - it’s an experience that changes your perspective.

The Journey Begins: Helsinki to the High Arctic

We gathered in Helsinki, Finland, ahead of our Arctic charter flight - excitement already building amongst our incredible group.

And honestly? Helsinki Airport absolutely deserves its recent recognition as Best European Airport 2025. Calm, beautifully designed and effortless to navigate, it felt like the perfect beginning to an expedition where logistics matter.

Then came our charter flight to Longyearbyen, Svalbard - the northernmost public airport in the world with scheduled flights.

Or at least… that was the plan.

As we approached Svalbard, thick cloud rolled in. Visibility dropped dramatically and landing simply wasn’t possible.

For hours, we circled above the Arctic landscape below, carrying additional fuel specifically for moments like this. Eventually, after two attempts and over five hours in the air, the difficult decision was made to divert to mainland Norway.

And honestly? This became one of the biggest lessons of the trip.

No complaints. No frustration.

101 expedition passengers simply embraced the unpredictability.

Because this is expedition travel.

Nature sets the rules.

That willingness to surrender to the experience - to trust the process - is exactly what makes these journeys so special.

Eventually, after a long but unforgettable travel day, we finally landed in Svalbard and transferred straight to the ship.

No queues. No baggage chaos. No stress.

Within minutes we were boarding our floating Arctic home: Ocean Explorer.

Life Onboard Ocean Explorer

From the moment we boarded, Ocean Explorer felt different.

Elegant without feeling pretentious. Luxurious without losing its adventurous soul.

Boarding itself was seamless - every guest personally escorted to their cabin one-to-one, a lovely luxury touch that immediately set the tone for the experience.

Our cabins were stunning.

Modern, beautifully designed and incredibly spacious, complete with a private walk-out veranda - front-row seats to glaciers, wildlife and Arctic scenery.

One feature we unexpectedly loved? Heated bathroom floors. After cold Zodiac landings and Arctic hikes, these little details matter more than you can imagine.

And unlike larger cruise ships, Ocean Explorer feels wonderfully intimate.

With only around 100 guests onboard, you genuinely get to know fellow travellers, the crew, and expedition team.

And what a beautiful mix of people it was - British, Canadian, American, Russian, Serbian, Chinese, Australian, Polish and more.

In a world that can sometimes feel divided, this journey reminded me of something important:

Travel connects us.

We are far more united than politics sometimes makes us believe.

Expedition Cruising: Not Cruising As You Know It

Before this trip, if I’m honest, “holiday” meant sunshine, beaches and cocktails.

This changed that.

Expedition cruising isn’t about entertainment schedules or formal nights.

It’s about:

Days are shaped entirely by nature.

Weather changes.

Wildlife appears unexpectedly.

Plans evolve.

And somehow, that unpredictability becomes part of the magic.

Every evening brought expert briefings preparing us for the next day’s adventures - where we might land, wildlife opportunities, conditions and safety information.

Every morning brought excitement.

Where would we explore next?

Zodiac Adventures: The Real Arctic Experience

The beating heart of expedition travel lies in the Zodiac excursions.

Here’s how it works:

You’re called by group number, head to the ready room, get fully kitted up, then board inflatable Zodiac boats directly from the ship.

And suddenly… you’re in the wild.

No barriers.

No crowds.

Just you and nature.

Fjortende Julibreen Glacier

Our very first Zodiac outing took us to Fjortende Julibreen (July 14th Glacier) - a dramatic glacier stretching 16km long.

Being close enough to hear the glacier move was surreal.

Sudden cracking sounds echoed through the fjord - loud, gunshot-like booms as ancient ice shifted and carved.

We spotted puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, seals and reindeer nearby.

And perhaps Kelly's favourite moment?

Collecting a chunk of ancient Arctic ice straight from the water to chill my wine later onboard.

A little surreal… and completely unforgettable.

Hamiltonbukta

Nature quickly reminded us who’s in charge.

During one Zodiac outing we watched a skua successfully hunt and feed on a guillemot - raw, honest nature unfolding in front of us.

Nearby, a seal surfaced curiously beside us before disappearing into the water again.

Towering glaciers surrounded us and, at one point, we witnessed an avalanche tumbling dramatically down the mountainside.

You simply cannot script moments like these.

Conwaybreen Glacier

Another standout experience was visiting Conwaybreen, where we drifted near active ice formations.

The sound?

Like giant bowls of Rice Krispies.

Snap. Crackle. Pop.

The glacier constantly alive around us.

Afterwards, we floated quietly with mugs of hot chocolate and Baileys - the kind of moment that somehow feels both adventurous and deeply peaceful at the same time.

Wildlife Encounters: Pure Arctic Magic

Svalbard delivered wildlife encounters beyond anything I could have imagined.

Polar Bears 🐻‍❄️

The moment every Arctic traveller dreams of.

And somehow… we saw two.

One feeding on a walrus carcass - a powerful reminder of survival in this harsh environment.

Another simply playing in the snow.

Rolling.

Walking.

Completely at ease in its wild Arctic home.

Pure magic.

Walruses 🦭

After jokingly asking our expedition leader for “just one walrus”…

He delivered over 100.

At a haul-out site we quietly observed huge walruses resting together, grunting, snoring, burping and occasionally farting (yes, really!).

Raw, wild and utterly fascinating.

Beluga Whales 🐳

One magical afternoon, while touring the bridge of Ocean Explorer, a pod of beautiful white beluga whales swam right alongside the ship.

Silent. Elegant. Mesmerising.

Arctic Foxes, Reindeer & Seals

Throughout the expedition we encountered Arctic foxes quietly moving across tundra, white reindeer grazing peacefully and seals constantly popping up to investigate us.

It genuinely felt like living inside a wildlife documentary.

Hiking The Arctic Wilderness

Landings varied hugely - from contemplative walks to more adventurous terrain.

At Alicehamna, we explored old trapper cabins and graves while learning about Arctic history and survival.

At Blomstrandhalvøya, we walked across land only recently exposed by retreating glaciers.

We saw:

🐻‍❄️ Fresh polar bear footprints

🧊 Newly revealed landscapes shaped by melting ice

Standing somewhere once completely covered by glacier ice is humbling.

It transforms climate change from something theoretical into something deeply real.

Climate Change: Seeing It First-Hand

This became one of the most emotional parts of the journey.

We expected snow.

Cold.

Harsh Arctic conditions.

Instead?

Warmth.

And not the kind of warmth you expect this far north.

Kelly is someone who is permanently cold at home, but she found herself standing comfortably in conditions that should feel dramatically colder.

And honestly?

That felt unsettling.

This wasn’t reading statistics.

This was seeing climate change with her own eyes.

Retreating glaciers.

Changing landscapes.

Warmer temperatures.

Land newly exposed.

It’s impossible to witness without reflecting on our own responsibility.

The Midnight Sun

Perhaps one of the strangest - and most magical - experiences was the Midnight Sun.

At 2am, it was still broad daylight.

No darkness.

No stars.

No sunset.

Just soft golden light wrapping itself endlessly around the horizon.

At first, your body clock becomes completely confused.

But eventually?

Time feels slower.

More peaceful.

More intentional.

Wellness, Reflection & Unexpected Peace

What surprised us most about expedition travel was the feeling of peace.

Real peace.

The remoteness.

The stillness.

The absence of noise.

For the first time in a very long time, we genuinely rested.

As Kelly approaches a milestone birthday next year, this trip quietly reminded her how important wellbeing really is.

Health.

Perspective.

Slowing down.

Finding space to reconnect with yourself.

This journey gave her that.

And perhaps that is expedition cruising’s greatest luxury.
