If there is one thing this educational trip proved to us, it’s this: the perfect family holiday doesn’t have to choose between adventure and relaxation - you really can have both.

For years, Florida has been one of the most popular family destinations we sell, and Caribbean cruising continues to grow in popularity too. But combining the two into one seamless Cruise & Stay holiday? That’s where the magic really happens.

Over the course of nearly two weeks, Harper and I experienced first-hand what it’s like to combine the high-energy thrills of Universal Orlando Resort with the laid-back sunshine, culture and fun of a Caribbean cruise onboard Carnival Celebration.

And honestly?

It might just be one of the best family travel combinations we’ve ever done.

This wasn’t just a holiday (although Harper may disagree with me there!). It was an educational designed to properly experience the journey exactly as our clients would - the flights, the hotels, the parks, the cruise, the transfers, the food, the logistics and, most importantly, whether this style of trip genuinely works for families.

Spoiler alert: it really does.

The Journey Begins: Orlando Bound

Like many families, we started our adventure with the flight to Florida - and after plenty of questions from clients about long-haul travel with children, I was keen to properly experience the process again from a parent perspective.

Travel days can often feel stressful, especially as a solo parent, but this trip was a reminder that planning really is everything.

One of our biggest hacks? The Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app.

If you’re travelling to the USA, download it. Seriously.

Rather than standing in huge immigration queues after landing, we completed our details in advance and breezed through the process. After a long flight, anything that gets you into “holiday mode” faster is a win in my eyes.

Before we knew it, we had arrived in Orlando - ready for six nights of park thrills, giant milkshakes, rollercoasters and, apparently, a worrying amount of arcade prizes.

Home for Six Nights: Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort

We based ourselves at Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort, and honestly? This hotel completely surprised us.

Universal classifies Cabana Bay as a Prime Value hotel, but in reality, it offers far more than many families expect at this price point.

From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a retro postcard from the 1950s and 60s. Neon signs, vintage cars, old-school Americana vibes - it genuinely feels immersive without trying too hard.

Harper summed it up perfectly:

"It feels like being inside a giant colourful movie set."

And she wasn’t wrong.

What we loved most was how incredibly family-friendly it was.

There are two huge pool areas, including a giant waterslide pool and - perhaps our favourite feature - the only lazy river across all Universal Orlando hotels.

After long park days, floating around the lazy river became our reset button.

Cabana Bay also has something incredibly valuable for families: space.

It doesn’t feel cramped or chaotic, even during busy periods.

Then there’s the bowling alley - yes, an actual bowling alley inside the hotel - which quickly turned into our evening entertainment (although Harper would probably like it officially noted that I still owe her a rematch).

The location? Fantastic.

Volcano Bay sits literally next door, while complimentary shuttles take you effortlessly to CityWalk and the parks.

But perhaps the biggest perk of staying onsite?

Early Park Admission.

And trust me - in Universal - this matters.

Universal Orlando: The Thrills Begin

We threw ourselves straight into the parks, and if there’s one thing we quickly learned, it’s this:

Universal is intense - in the best possible way.

The energy, the excitement, the atmosphere… it’s full-on from the moment you walk through the gates.

For thrill-seekers, this place is heaven.

For Harper? She had officially found her happy place.

One standout? VelociCoaster.

Watching the coaster from our hotel room quickly became part of our daily routine, and once we rode it… wow.

But the biggest surprise of the trip?

Epic Universe.

Without question, this became one of the highlights of our Florida stay.

From the incredible theming to the next-generation attractions, Universal has genuinely raised the bar.

Stardust Racers immediately became our favourite ride of the trip - so good we rode it twice.

Harper was obsessed.

The Wizarding World’s Battle at the Ministry felt hugely immersive, while Dark Universe delivered some of the most impressive storytelling we’ve seen in a theme park environment.

Even Super Nintendo World - while not entirely our thing - was undeniably clever and incredibly popular.

The biggest takeaway?

If you’re planning Universal in 2026 or beyond: plan smart.

Queue times build quickly, especially in Epic Universe, and staying onsite with early access genuinely transforms the experience.

Theme Park Reality: You Need Rest Days

Here’s the honest truth nobody tells you:

Universal is amazing.

But it is also exhausting.

After several consecutive park days, we were absolutely feeling it.

Four years ago, when we visited Disney, we quickly realised the value of alternating busy park days with hotel downtime.

This trip reinforced that lesson.

Unless you’re combining Florida with another destination (more on that shortly), trying to do park after park after park can become overwhelming - especially for children.

Which is exactly why what came next worked so brilliantly.

Because after six days of rollercoasters, queues, adrenaline and giant portions…

We traded Florida thrills for Caribbean chills.

And honestly?

It was the perfect balance.

Caribbean Chills: From Rollercoasters to Ocean Breezes

After six nights of Florida thrills, rollercoasters, giant milkshakes and endless steps around Universal Orlando, it was time for the second half of our adventure - and honestly, this is where the magic of a Cruise & Stay holiday really came into its own.

Rather than heading straight home exhausted (which, after Universal, would have been very tempting), we swapped adrenaline for ocean views and made our way from Orlando to Miami to board Carnival Celebration for seven nights of Caribbean sunshine, adventure and much-needed relaxation.

And this transition? It worked perfectly.

From Orlando to Miami: Smooth Sailing Starts Early

One thing we really wanted to test during this educational was the practicality of combining Florida with a cruise - particularly for families.

Would it feel stressful?

Would it feel rushed?

Would it actually work?

The answer: absolutely yes.

After checking out of Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort, we made our way south to Miami. Rather than another airport, more luggage stress or a complicated transfer, it felt surprisingly seamless.

And then suddenly, there she was.

Carnival Celebration.

Bright, bold and impossible to miss.

From the moment we arrived at the port, embarkation was smooth, efficient and surprisingly stress-free. Bags gone, check-in complete, passports checked and suddenly… holiday mode activated all over again.

After the pace of Orlando, stepping onboard felt like one collective exhale.

Carnival Celebration: Big Energy, Big Personality

Carnival Celebration is unapologetically fun.

This isn’t a formal, quiet, sit-by-the-library kind of cruise ship. It’s vibrant, energetic and packed with entertainment from morning until night - and for families? It genuinely delivers.

Divided into themed zones inspired by Carnival’s history and destinations, the ship somehow manages to feel enormous yet easy to navigate.

Whether we were wandering through 820 Biscayne, grabbing food in Celebration Central, or watching the sunset from one of the outer decks, there was always something happening.

And somehow… it never felt overwhelming.

Cabins, Comfort & Family Friendly Living

After a busy Florida stay, having a comfortable cabin became really important.

Cruise cabins are often underestimated, but this quickly became our calm space to recharge between adventures.

The beauty of cruising for families is simple:

You unpack once.

• No hotel hopping.

• No constant repacking.

• No dragging suitcases around.

• Instead, your hotel moves with you.

• Every morning brought a completely different destination, while we kept the same cabin, the same bed and the same routine - something that genuinely makes travelling with children easier.

Food, Dining & Allergy Confidence

If there’s one thing Carnival Celebration absolutely gets right, it’s food.

And for families with dietary concerns or allergies, this is such an important consideration.

The level of care and attention around allergies genuinely stood out to us.

Crew were knowledgeable, reassuring and proactive, ensuring meals felt safe without taking away from the experience.

From relaxed grab-and-go options to proper sit-down dining, there was something for every mood.

Guy’s Burger Joint quickly became a favourite.

Shaq’s Big Chicken? Dangerous (in the best possible way).

And then there was Chibang! - Carnival’s Mexican-Chinese fusion dining concept - which completely exceeded expectations.

Even our Main Dining Room evenings became part of the fun.

Trying new foods.

Talking through the day.

Watching Harper confidently order for herself.

Although one dinner did come with a lesson: sitting at the very aft of the ship during rougher waters is not ideal if motion sickness isn’t your friend! Safe to say, I now understand why seasoned cruisers talk so passionately about cabin and dining locations.

Entertainment: Carnival Really Knows How to Put on a Show

If Universal brought the thrills, Carnival brought the atmosphere.

And honestly? We were blown away by how much was included.

• Live music echoed around the ship every evening.

• Motown classics.

• Latin performances.

• Poolside games.

• Deck parties.

• Family quizzes.

• Movies under the stars.

• Comedy.

• Arcades.

• Sweet shops.

• Something was happening constantly.

• The theatre productions genuinely surprised us too - polished, energetic and proper West-End-meets-cruise entertainment.

And then there was BOLT, the rollercoaster at sea.

• Yes. A rollercoaster. On a cruise ship.

• Completely ridiculous.

• Completely brilliant.

For Harper, the pools, slides, activities and kids programming kept things exciting without ever feeling forced.

But perhaps one of our favourite parts?

The people.

Cruises have this lovely way of bringing strangers together.

By day three, you’re recognising familiar faces, chatting by the pool, seeing people again at dinner and naturally building connections.

And somehow, Harper became part of the entertainment herself.

After enthusiastically joining games and activities, she somehow ended up helping “activate the fun” for thousands of guests onboard.

Safe to say, by the end of the sailing, everyone knew Harper Amy.

Cozumel, Mexico: Sharks, Stingrays & A Little Caribbean Magic

If one day completely stole the show, it was Cozumel.

This wasn’t just a shore excursion.

It became one of those travel memories we’ll talk about for years.

Our adventure began onboard a catamaran, sailing turquoise waters that honestly looked too blue to be real.

Then came snorkelling.

Initially, Harper stayed near the surface, happy just observing the underwater world.

But then something changed.

Curiosity kicked in.

She wanted more.

After asking one of the guides for help, she learned how to dive deeper - properly exploring beneath the surface rather than simply floating above it.

Watching confidence grow in real time like that? Magic.

Then came the moment she had been waiting for:

Swimming with sharks.

And honestly?

She absolutely loved it.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Just excitement.

Followed by one of the most incredible stingray encounters we’ve ever experienced.

Beyond the excitement, what made this excursion so special was the educational element.

We learned about marine conservation, rehabilitation and rescue programmes, understanding first-hand why protecting these ecosystems matters.

Travel really is education in its best form.

And then, of course, there was Manatos - Cozumel’s local celebrity iguana.

At 17 years old and charging approximately $15 a photo (what a businessman), he quickly became one of the unexpected highlights of the day.

Harper also embraced local culture in the best way possible - having her hair braided by local artisans near the port, which, in the Caribbean heat, quickly turned into the smartest decision of the trip.

Roatan, Honduras: Unexpectedly One of Our Favourite Stops

Roatan surprised us.

Completely.

Lush, green and dramatically beautiful, it felt entirely different from what we had expected.

Here, adventure took centre stage.

Our ziplining excursion delivered breathtaking views over rainforest canopy, sea and jungle - and was exactly the type of experience that reminds you why family travel matters.

Adventure together creates memories differently.

There’s something about shared adrenaline that sticks.

Beyond the ziplining, Roatan offered a lovely insight into local island life - colourful communities, warm people and landscapes that felt untouched compared to busier Caribbean destinations.

It quickly became one of those places we both agreed we’d love to return to.

Bahamas Bliss: The Perfect Final Exhale

After adventure, wildlife and excitement, the Bahamas delivered exactly what we needed.

• Beach.

• Sunshine.

• Space to slow down.

• Crystal-clear water, warm sand and a chance to simply stop.

  
  

And after the pace of Universal, excursions and ship life, this final Caribbean pause rounded the itinerary off beautifully.

Sometimes the best holiday moments aren’t planned.

They’re the quiet ones.

Feet in the sand.

No schedule.

No alarms.

Just being present.

Miami Post Stay: One Final Adventure

One thing we always recommend where possible?

Don’t rush home straight after a cruise.

Instead of battling immediate airport transfers, we added a short Miami post-stay, giving us time to reset before flying home.

And honestly?

It made such a difference.

Cruises can be surprisingly full-on, and having one final night to slow down helped the whole trip feel less rushed.

But the biggest highlight?

The Everglades airboat experience.

What a way to finish.

Speeding across wetlands, spotting wildlife and learning more about Florida’s unique ecosystem felt educational, exciting and completely different from anything else we had experienced during the trip.

From alligators to conservation conversations, it was the perfect final reminder that travel is about more than just ticking places off a list.

It’s about understanding them.

Honestly?

We think it might be.
