Spotlight on Budva, Montenegro

Set in the middle of Montenegro's beautiful Adriatic coast, Budva is the largest of resorts residing in this small Balkan country. Our Travel Director, Kelly Baldwin recently returned and has all the top tips!

EXPLORE

Soaked in history, Budva has much to offer in the way of Medieval relics. Stroll along the city walls and stop at the outlook posts for stunning views across the sea. Or head to the top of Budva Citadel, the town's fortress once used for pirate-spotting. Arguably the best views of the town's terracota-topped roofs. The elegant Venetian style of Budva Old Town is certainly worth exploring. Within the historic city alls, you'll find charming squares, churches boutiques and craft shops to wander around. Budva is also the main draw for beach action, with more than 15 stunning beaches to pick from in the surrounding region. Kamenovo Beach is in a large bay with crystal-clear, turquoise waters, and in the very heart of Budva is pretty Mogren Beach, just five minute's walk from the old town.

ENTERTAIN

A short boat ride away from Budva is Sveti Nikola Island. Well worth heading over for a day trip, you'll find a huge array if wildlife, beautiful beaches with great views and a restaurant too. Completely, revived, Budva's old town is the bustling hub of the city. Here you'll spot lots of eateries lining the squares of, for a more high-end experience, you could try one of the many seafood restaurants. Known as the 'Miami of Montenegro' the nightlife here is certainly buzzing. The harbour's huge assortment of open-air nightclubs is a real draw for the jet-set crowd. Most stay open until the early hours and are free to get into, with many giving away shots of grappa to tempt you in. Budva is now very much on the top-DJ list, so you're in for a real treat on the music front too. EAT Over time, influences of Turkey, Italy and Croatia have all enhanced Montenegrin cuisine. Drawing upon locally grown organic produce and locally reared lamb and veal, the tastes are amazing. Head to a traditional restaurant - known locally as konobas - and feast on authentic delights such as grilled kebabs, goulash and cabbage leaves stuffed with mincemeat. Fresh seafood is also a big deal here and the local red wine, Plantaza Vranac, is a must-try. Don't miss the kremsnita (cream filled pastry) for a small, sweet treat. Montenegro is also really good value for money. For example the average price of a beer is around two Euros and around 15 Euros for a three-course meal. Another great reason to visit.

WHERE TO STAY Enjoy a 7 night package from £529pp however we'd recommend the fantastic rooftop pool and bar at the four-star plus Iberostar Slavija, located in the heart of Budva. Staying on a Bed and Breakfast basis you can enjoy a 7 night package holiday from £620pp and whats more, Kelly has conducted a site visit of the hotel and even knows the manager for those all important little extras! If you're travelling with children, we'd recommend Iberostar Bellevue where again, we've conducted a site visit and once again... know the manager!
