Travel Consultant: Mia Aspire Travel Role: Senior Travel Consultant Tour Operator Hosting the Trip: Not in the Guidebooks & Southend Airport Destination: Morocco Dates: 11th–15th November 2025 Trip Type: Immersive Educational

What was the purpose of this educational trip?
This was a destination educational trip, designed to explore Morocco firsthand so I can provide expert advice to clients planning their own journeys.
Who hosted/organised the trip? |The trip was expertly hosted by Not In the Guidebooks, with support from Southend Airport. Special thanks to NIGB BDM Vicky Edwards, Sales Consultant Vicky L., and Sarah Martin at Southend Airport.
Where did you stay and what stood out about the accommodation?
Ouarzazate: Riad Dar Chamaa
Merzouga Desert: Morocco Stars Camp
Valley of Dades: Riad Dades Paradise
Marrakech: Riad Dar Silsila
I fell in love with the traditional riad style in Ouarzazate, Merzouga, and Dades Valley. Courtyards, cosy rooms, warm colours and a peaceful atmosphere made each stay feel unique. The desert camp in Merzouga was truly unforgettable - imagine stars overhead, local drummers by the fire, and complete silence in the dunes. My only slight disappointment was Marrakech’s Riad Dar Silsila, which felt less charming than the others.
What excursions or site visits did you experience? Our journey took us from Marrakech through the High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate, visiting the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. We explored the Draa Valley, rode camels in the Merzouga Desert, and stayed in a luxury desert camp under the stars. Highlights included:
Visiting Rissani
Trekking the Todra Gorges
Hiking in Monkey Fingers Valley
Driving through the Valley of Roses
Hands-on pottery in Skoura
Marrakech sightseeing: Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and bustling souks
Standout experiences / “wow” moments
Riding camels at sunset in the desert was surreal - golden dunes, fiery skies, and the peaceful desert night. The experience of sleeping under a star-filled sky in Merzouga is something I’ll never forget.
Who is this destination best suited to?
Adventure seekers and culture enthusiasts.
What did you learn that will help your clients? Morocco’s history, traditions, and hospitality are incredibly rich. From sharing mint tea to listening to Berber stories, every moment offers a learning experience. Stepping outside your comfort zone - whether camel riding, hiking, or trying local dishes - is so rewarding.
Were there any surprises? Morocco is safer, more welcoming, and more relaxed than I expected. Its landscapes are remarkably diverse - snow-capped mountains, desert dunes, and lush valleys all in one trip.
Food & drink
Traditional Moroccan food shines with couscous, chicken, lamb, vegetables, and rich flavours. Breakfasts are simple, and English-style options are limited.
Travel experience
Flying from Southend Airport was stress-free, fast, and calm - a real contrast to larger airports.
Top tips for clients
Pack layers: desert days are warm, nights can be chilly
Footwear: trainers for hiking and walking
Travel essentials: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, power bank
Children: books, colouring, entertainment for long drives
Health: consider stomach tablets for new foods
Would you go back?
Absolutely! Morocco is so varied that one trip barely scratches the surface. Returning means exploring more regions, flavours, and experiences.
