Some destinations you visit with a clear idea of what to expect.

Morocco wasn't quite that for me.

I arrived expecting Marrakech - the souks, the riads, the colour, the food, the chaos.

What I discovered was a country of extraordinary contrasts: ancient medinas and modern cities, mountains and coastline, incredible food, beautiful hotels, intimate riads, adventure, relaxation and, above everything else, wonderfully warm people.

Having experienced Marrakech and Casablanca first-hand with Intrepid Travel, I can honestly say Morocco is so much more than a short city break.

It's a destination you can shape around you.

Welcome to Marrakech

Marrakech hits you immediately.

The energy. The colour. The noise. The smells.

Step into the medina and you're surrounded by narrow, winding lanes filled with merchants, lanterns, leather, textiles, spices and endless little discoveries.

And yes - there are mopeds and carts appearing from seemingly nowhere!

But that's part of the magic.

The souks aren't simply somewhere to shop. They're an experience in themselves.

The Riad Experience

One of my favourite things about Marrakech is the contrast between the outside world and what lies behind the doors.

You can be walking through the wonderfully chaotic medina one moment and, through an unassuming doorway, find yourself somewhere completely different.

Quiet.

Cool.

Peaceful.

Beautiful.

Riad Sapphire & Spa

With just eight suites, Riad Sapphire & Spa is intimate, elegant and wonderfully peaceful.

Traditional Moroccan artistry sits alongside refined luxury, with tranquil courtyards, fountains, a pool, rooftop spaces and an exquisite spa and hammam.

It's the perfect example of why choosing the right accommodation in Marrakech matters.

Riad Joudour

Our second riad, Riad Joudour, offered another beautiful take on traditional Moroccan hospitality.

Located in the historic medina, close to Bahia Palace and the souks, it combines restored Moroccan architecture with contemporary comfort.

Courtyards, a pool and a rooftop terrace overlooking the medina create a wonderfully calm sanctuary away from the energy outside.

Two riads. Two very different personalities. Both completely Moroccan.

Marrakech From Above

If there's one experience I'd recommend putting on your Morocco wish list, it's a hot air balloon flight at sunrise.

The alarm?

4am.

Worth it?

Absolutely.

We travelled out before dawn, arriving while the balloons were being prepared in the darkness.

Then the sun began to rise.

We lifted off and drifted quietly above the landscape, with the Atlas Mountains stretching across the horizon as the light changed around us.

It was peaceful, surreal and completely unforgettable.

After landing, a traditional Berber breakfast and flight certificate completed the experience.

Bucket list officially ticked.

Morocco Through Food

If you're a foodie, Morocco is going to make you very happy.

We ate our way through Marrakech and Casablanca - from traditional tagines and couscous to soups, olives, pastries and street food.

And some of my favourite experiences weren't necessarily in the most luxurious restaurants.

They were the simple, authentic moments.

A warm homemade soup in the central square.

Fresh food in the souks.

Traditional Moroccan tagine.

And meals where the setting, people and atmosphere became just as important as what was on the plate.

Dar Dada – An Evening to Remember

In Casablanca, Dar Dada delivered one of those evenings where everything comes together.

A beautiful traditional riad.

Zellij tilework.

Lantern light.

A central fountain.

And an incredible Moroccan feast.

Tagines, couscous, salads and sweet treats were followed by music and belly dancing, with the whole evening becoming a celebration rather than simply a meal.

It's experiences like this that make Morocco feel so special.

You're not simply eating. You're becoming part of the atmosphere.

Travel That Makes a Difference Amal

One of the most memorable experiences of the entire trip wasn't a hotel or sightseeing excursion.

It was lunch at Amal Center Marrakech.

Amal is a social enterprise providing women who have been denied opportunities with culinary and life-skills training, helping them move into employment and financial independence.

We met Nora, the inspirational founder, and heard the story behind what she has built.

There is a restaurant, cooking school, garden kitchen and other initiatives designed to create genuine opportunities for women in Marrakech.

It was a powerful reminder that travel can do more than take us somewhere.

It can support people, communities and futures.

Intrepid Travel has supported Amal for many years, including through the Intrepid Foundation.

For me, this was one of the moments that demonstrated what meaningful, responsible travel can look like.

The Magic of Moroccan Hospitality

Something stayed with me throughout the trip.

The people.

From the souks to the hotels, restaurants, guides and riads, I consistently experienced warmth, kindness and genuine hospitality.

There is a real sense that people want you to enjoy their country.

And that makes a huge difference.

Next Stop… Casablanca

Around three and a half hours from Marrakech by road, Casablanca feels completely different.

Where Marrakech is intimate, colourful and maze-like, Casablanca feels broader, brighter and more modern.

It's a fascinating contrast - and one that makes the two destinations work incredibly well together.

If you're considering Morocco, I would absolutely look at a Marrakech & Casablanca twin-centre.

Exploring Casablanca

Casablanca is a city of layers.

We explored its historic churches, museums, old gates and medina, whilst also discovering the modern side of the city.

There's history everywhere you look.

Architecture tells stories.

The old and new sit alongside one another.

And then there are those moments of cinematic magic - including locations recognisable from films such as Mission: Impossible.

It's a city that rewards exploration rather than simply being used as an airport stopover.

Hassan II Mosque

One of Casablanca's defining landmarks is the spectacular Hassan II Mosque.

Standing beside the Atlantic, its scale and architecture are extraordinary.

It's one of those places where photographs simply don't quite capture the feeling of being there.

Casablanca's Souks

Having experienced Marrakech's souks first-hand, it was fascinating to see how different Casablanca feels.

Marrakech

Intimate, maze-like, colourful and wonderfully chaotic.

Casablanca

Broader, brighter, more structured and with a distinctly modern energy.

Neither is better.

They're simply different - and that's exactly why combining them works so well.

Where We Stayed – Hotel Idou Anfa

Our Casablanca base was Hotel Idou Anfa, right in the heart of the city.

The rooms were spacious and comfortable, with wonderful views towards the Hassan II Mosque and Atlantic Ocean.

It was a great base for exploring Casablanca and experiencing the city beyond the traditional tourist route.

A Taste of Local Casablanca

One of my favourite lunches was at Dar El Kaid, tucked inside the old medina.

It felt like stepping into a traditional Moroccan home.

Beautiful surroundings, peaceful atmosphere and a wonderfully authentic tagine.

Nothing complicated.

Just generous Moroccan hospitality and food full of flavour.

Sometimes those are the meals you remember most.
